What is the Butokudo?

The purpose of this organization is to propagate the teachings of O'Sensei Richard Kim and others like Gogen Yamaguichi, Benny Allen, Peter Urban, Chuck Merriman, Dr. Dom Lopez, and Bob Dalgleish, who have contributed to our history as one of the strongest and best organizations in the world teaching traditional motivated karate-do.

Butoku Do is a continuation of the Dai Nippon Butoku Kai, which O'Sensei Richard Kim began propagating in America when he moved to San Francisco in the late 1950s from Yokohama, Japan.

Sensei Kim, in his later years, became disassociated with the Dai Nippon Butoku Kai, citing on several occasions, that it had lost its direction and its purity of mind.

It is our intention to not become another politically motivated organization; but, rather, one that disseminates true martial arts to its members in hopes of promoting peace, prosperity and, in general, a better life for not just its members but the world in general. This would be accomplished by setting and developing role models for our youth to look up to and to encourage adults to continue to aspire to positive character traits and excellence in martial arts skills.

It was apparent on several occasions that Sensei Kim believed in quality versus quantity, and this will be one of the maxims of Butoku Do. We are not necessarily interested in creating a huge organization, but rather a group of dedicated martial artists who are interested in quality versus quantity and who will support each other for mutual benefit.

Our group is recognized by many countries around the world, including Australia, United States, England, Brazil, Trinidad, New Zealand, Scotland, Ireland, Ukraine, Serbia, and Philippines, to mention but a few and, of course, across Canada.

MISSION STATEMENT
