Hollywood Instructor to the Stars

Hungarian-born American stunt-coordinator, author and martial arts instructor, Emil Farkas started his marital arts career while still a youngster, and before age 20 he had earned his black belt in both Judo and Karate. Considered one of Hollywood’s most respected fight choreographers, Farkas is internationally recognized as an authority on martial arts. He holds a 7th degree Black Belt in Karate, 4th degree Black Belt in Judo and a 4th degree Black Belt in Ju-Jitsu. He is one of America's foremost Martial Arts Historians.

Farkas, who has been involved in the martial arts for over 40 years, came to the United States in 1965. Shortly thereafter, he began his movie career and has since worked on dozens of films from Easy Rider to Killer Elite as a stuntman and stunt-coordinator. Television viewers have seen his work in such series as Mannix, Spiderman, The Hulk, Mission Impossible and The Fall Guy. When not busy in film work, he teaches at his dojo (gym), the Beverly Hills Karate Academy, which has been in the same location since 1970. Over the years, Farkas has taught martial arts to many of Hollywood's leading stars, and his expertise in realistic street combat makes him one of the most sought after instructors in the world.

Besides teaching and stunt work, Farkas has authored a number of books, including "The Complete Martial Arts Catalogue" (Simon &Schuster), "Fight Back: A Woman's Guide to Self-Defense" (Holt), "The Overlook Martial Arts Dictionary" (Viking), "Training & Fighting Skills with World Champion Benny Urquidez", and the most authoritative book on the arts ever written "The Marital Arts Encyclopedia."

He wrote the original screenplay for Force 5 and wrote and co-produced the feature film Vendetta. Farkas has a set of six instructional tapes on Combat Shotokan and a set of five tapes on Combat Jujitsu He has also released a video on Cane Fighting and one on Realistic Street Combat.

In 2000, Farkas and Benny "The Jet" Urquidez founded the Los Angeles Film Fighting Institute, which teaches martial artists the intricacies of stunt work. Farkas has been featured on the cover of over a dozen martial arts magazines in the United States and abroad and has had dozens of articles written on him and his system of "Combat Shotokan."

Currently, he is finishing two major reference books, "The Marital Arts Book of Knowledge" and "The Photo History of American Marital Arts," from 1900 to the present. He is also writing a novel with a martial arts theme, ” Going for Silver”.

Emil Farkas specializes in teaching private lessons at his own school or at private residences. Among his students are numerous lawyers, doctors, dentists, motion picture executives, screenwriters, bankers, real estate developers, musicians and housewives. He has taught, among others: Herb Alpert, Fred Williamson, Dennis Hopper, Lalo Schifrin, Sherry Caffaro, Mike Connors, Peggy Lipton, Raymond St. Jacques, Irene Tsu, Peter Fonda, Linda Blair, A] Ruddy, Lou Adler, Paul Williams, Ted Mann, James Cann, Phil Spector, Barry Gordi, Jeff Barry and Lorenzo Lamas.

In 1995 he founded his own federation, The United International Martial Arts Federation, whose goal is to promote traditional martial arts world wide.
